Bachelor of Science in Architecture – Bachelor of Science in Architecture leads to a four year pre-professional undergraduate degree. The curriculum combines a general liberal arts education with concentrated studies in architecture. As such, students receive a rigorous intellectual training in the sciences, the humanities, and the arts, as well as a direct, hands-on approach to synthesizing this knowledge in the architectural design studios. The Bachelor of Science in Architecture instills a broad cultural awareness and, most significantly, the ability to act upon this awareness. The undergraduate degree provides the student with a strong educational foundation for not only the profession itself but also for the other arts, business, and public service. Students who desire professional architectural registration will be required to study for an additional two years to receive a National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) accredited Master of Architecture degree. Admission to the program is selective. Master of Architecture 3-Year Program – The Master of Architecture program culminates in a National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) accredited professional degree for students with an undergraduate degree in a field other than architecture. It is assumed that the student’s undergraduate education will have provided the intellectual training necessary to undertake a rigorous, accelerated graduate curriculum. The focus of the curriculum is the development of the student’s critical, technical, and inventive ability in an architectural discourse. Master of Architecture 2-Year Program – The two-year program is advanced placement in the Master of Architecture program for students who have strong design skills and hold an undergraduate pre-professional degree that is part of an NAAB accredited program. Design studios and theory courses focus on the broader cultural implications of architecture while courses in technology and professional practice prepare the student for the realities of architectural practice. The curriculum is supplemented by distinguished visiting faculty.
The Ohio State University offers 7,000 courses in 202 academic areas and a computerized library system accessing 3.7 million volumes. Located in Columbus, Ohio, the university is within 600 miles of two-thirds of the population of the United States. Columbus offers a strong professional architectural community, the Wexner Center for the Arts, the Ohio Historical Society, the Columbus Museum of Art, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, and a range of contemporary and historical architecture.
Architecture is not simply a professional service, it is also a cultural practice. The undergraduate program in architecture offers a strong curriculum in architectural design, theory, and technology within the larger framework of a liberal arts education. The graduate program focuses these investigations in preparation for a student’s entry into the profession. In both cases, the emphasis is placed on design and how it is influenced by theory and technology. Instruction focuses on the cultural implications of architecture to strengthen intellectual growth, to stimulate creative and analytical powers, and to foster the development of the skills necessary for significant performance within the profession.
The Master of Architecture and Bachelor of Architecture curricula provide a professional/liberal arts education for the pursuit of knowledge and an education for the practice of architecture. The undergraduate education is comprised of general education courses, a design studio sequence with integrated courses in architectural history/theory, graphics, structures, and construction, selective studios, elective seminars, and general electives within the University. The Master of Architecture curriculum pairs cultural discourse with technological knowledge through design practice. Conceptual breadth and technical depth are joined in the School’s intensive studio culture. Seminars in history and theory are supplemented by courses in systems, sustainability, structures and professional practice. The School’s extensive computing and fabrication facilities reinforce studio production with over 70 design software programs, over 500 computers, printers, and advanced milling and modeling equipment. All studios have a 12:1 student-to-faculty ratio that allow the investigation of design from a broad range of methodologies; the seminars permit an in-depth study of specific architectural issues; and the general electives encourage the development of relationships to other disciplines. The goal is to provide an education in which a sophisticated cultural and professional investigation of architecture is combined with a general education in the humanities and sciences.
